I Destroyed My Mother-In-Law’s New Dress
by on October 20, 2016 in

I was asked to alter my Mother-in-Law’s dress. This presented many problems. Fitting my mother-in-law. Cutting her dress. Sewing her dress. And of course, possibly ruining her dress.

There’s no way this could end well.

Watch as Christian attempts to alter her dress and his MIL’s reaction when things go horribly wrong

I am sorry you have destroyed your mother-in-laws dress. In my opinion you should have cut the top and inch or two longer so that you had that to reattach the bottom of the dress. I would have than gathered the bottom with three lines of basting stitching so that I could match the top circumference with the bottom. That infinity scarf could be used to make shoulder straps for MIL since strapless is not her thing.

I am sure you will be forgiven since the ladies knew going in it just may not turn out as planned.

You can do it! Gather the skirt part first. Straight stitch widest stitch length and loosen tension. Then pull the thread to gather the skirt part. You can match circumference to max stretch of the tube/top part. Pin to tube/top part, I normally just use 4 wonder clips (1each side then 1 front center, 1 back center). Easier with an overlock machine or at least a walking foot for your sewing machine. I think it’s ok to baste it first before using an overlock stitch in your sewing machine, just so it will be easier to seam rip if needed. The excess fabric you cut, you can use as straps. All the best!

I think you should use a serger to gather the top of the bottom half of the dress. Then you can sew it to the top.

You are very brave. Yep, a few lines of gathering first on the skirt to ease it down to size. Still salvageable. Or possibly a boob tube for your MIL, lol.
